Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand

Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve, Te Whanganui A Hei, covers 9 square kilometers and is New Zealand's sixth marine reserve. It is administered by the Department of Conservation.

This was chosen for a marine reserve because of the rich and varied habitats associated with the coastline and outlying islands. Reefs of hard rock, soft sediments, intricate caves and underwater arches provide homes for complex communities of plants, crustacean, mollusc's and fish. Sheltered from the worst of the southerly winds Te Whanganui-A-Hei gives visitors and unparalleled opportunity to learn from and enjoy an unspoilt marine environment.

Scuba divers enjoy the reserve for its sponge gardens and reef systems. Crayfish and black angel fish hide in the cracks and crevices of reefs around Mahurangi Island. In the large boulder fields near Motueka Island, curious schools of sweep may follow divers.

Delicate corals, usually found at depth, are close to the surface in Poikeke Island cave. Closer to shore, brittle starfish might be found on rocky platforms and red moki graze amid forests of seaweed. Predators, like the leather-jacket, pick their food from a range of smaller animals. of Cathedral Cove beach is an idyllic destination for picnics and swimming.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The beautiful place of Corcovado: The distinctive statue of Christ the Redeemer, arms spread to welcome the world, is the symbol of Rio de Janeiro and one of the seven New Wonders of the Modern World. It rests on top of Rio de Janeiro's Corcovado Mountain, 2,330ft (710m) above the beaches below, and is accessed via a miniature train that runs from the Cosme Vehlo District through the Atlantic rain forest to the foot of the statue. The train ride offers stunning vistas of Rio, and the view from the summit is breathtaking. Spread out beneath the statue is the Tijuca Forest, resplendent with attractions to enchant visitors in the cool of the rain forest among natural pools and waterfalls. There is for example the Mayrink chapel, which features murals painted by Candido Portinari, one of Brazil's best known modern artists, and the Museu do Acude, housing colonial furniture and a collection of china from the East India Company.

The Copacabana: This famous Rio beach neighborhood was just a small fishing village until a new highway changed the face of it sometime in the 1900s. The Copacabana Palace Hotel first opened its doors in 1923, and since then the area mushroomed with Neoclassical and Art Nouveau skyscrapers, penthouses and apartments. Visitors still flock, as they have always done, to the glamorous Palace Hotel, the place to be seen. Sometimes the visitor is only to have tea or a meal at the famed Cipriani restaurant. The beach itself has white sand and calm water and is festooned with kiosks. It is a popular spot for beach sports like soccer and volleyball, and a good place to sunbathe. Copacabana beach is particularly popular on New Year's. According to tradition, visitors dress in white and congregate here to celebrate in their droves, counting more than two million people during this time.

The History of Rio de Janeiro

Nearly five hundred years have seen RIO DE JANEIRO transformed from a fortified outpost on the rim of an unknown continent into one of the world’s great cities. Its recorded past is tied exclusively to the legacy of the colonialism on which it was founded. No lasting vestige survives of the civilization of the Tamoios people, who inhabited the land before the Portuguese arrived, and the city’s history effectively begins on January 1, 1502, when a Portuguese captain, André Gonçalves, steered his craft into Guanabara Bay, thinking he was heading into the mouth of a great river. The city takes its name from this event – Rio de Janeiro means the “River of January”. In 1555, the French, keen to stake a claim on the New World, established a garrison near the Sugar Loaf mountain, and the Governor General of Brazil, Mem de Sá, made an unsuccessful attempt to oust them. It was left to his son, Estácio de Sá, finally to defeat them in 1567, though he fell – mortally wounded – during the battle. The city then acquired its official name, São Sebastião de Rio de Janeiro, after the infant king of Portugal, and Rio began to develop on and around the Morro do Castelo – in front of where Santos Dumont airport now stands.

Praslin Island

Praslin Island -A tropical paradise of pristine beaches and magnificent natural wonders, the Seychelles inspire a sense of castaway seclusion and adventure. Located near the East African coast, just north of Madagascar, the Seychelles form an archipelago of 115 islands, scattered across the Indian Ocean. First settled by the French in 1770, the islands still feel undiscovered and only about 20 are inhabited. The Seychelles have no indigenous population and today they display a vibrant ethnic diversity – with the largest groups being of French, African, Indian and Chinese descent. A strong French Creole influence is evident in culture, custom and cuisine. The official languages are French and English, along with Seychellois Creole.

Protected land- and seascapes are home to unique-on-the-planet plant and marine life – with more than 1,000 recorded species of fish, a massive seabird colony, and the largest population of giant tortoises outside the Galapagos. Thrilling water sports and jungle exploration give a sense of Robinson Crusoe-style adventure and discovery. Of special note: the time zone of the Seychelles is just four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time – causing minimal jet lag when arriving from European and Asian cities.

The main attraction on Praslin is the Vallee de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's home to the endemic coco-de-mer palms that produce the world's largest nuts—they can weigh as much as 40 lb/18 kg. The nuts got their name—sea coconut—hundreds of years ago when they washed up on the shores of Africa and Asia. When its outer shell is removed, the nut looks amazingly like a woman's pelvis, both fore and aft, which explains the nut's status as a collector's item. (The "male" part of the tree looks appropriately male, leading to predictable iconography to signify ladies' and men's restrooms.)

Thien Cung (Heavenly Palace) Grotto -This recently discovered grotto is one of the most in Halong Bay. Thien Cung is situated on the southwest side of the bay, 4 km from the wharf outside of Halong City. It is located in a small range of islands that resemble a throne embracing two super grottoes at its core. The way to Thien Cung is perilous, covered on both sides by thick forest. After entering a narrow gate, the magnificent, 130 m long grotto opens up. In the last chamber of the grotto, a natural gushing stream of water bubbles throughout the year. Here there are three small ponds of clear water. One path meanders out of the grotto.
