When I was a kid, we had a desert tortoise for a pet. Toby was picked up -- ignorantly -- by someone in my family (can't remember who) on a visit to the Mojave Desert and stayed with our family in coastal Southern California for many years. Today these gentle beasts are facing a whole lot of threats -- most lately from the US Army and the Bureau of Land Management.
