Maui is the second largest in Hawaii and the largest island in Maui County. It has a population of 140,000 inhabitants. It is also known as ‘Valley Isle’ because of the presence of a vast fertile isthmus between its two volcanoes. The economy here is supported primarily through agriculture and tourism. Maui has an ancient history. The island was initially inhabited by Tahitians. Documented history of the region begins from the eighteenth century, when it was first discovered by the Europeans. The island played a crucial role in World War II. The region is characterized by a maritime temperate climate, with uniform temperatures all through the year; the average temperature is 25°C. The strong marine influence causes the relative humidity to be high, with extensive cloud formation and sudden showers.
